The Hong Kong Panel Study of Social Dynamics (HKPSSD) is the first ever city-wide representative household panel survey to track socioeconomic changes and their impact on people’s livelihood in Hong Kong. Four waves of data collection have been completed in 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2017, respectively, including 3,214 households, 7,218 adults and 958 children in the first wave, and 2,165 households, 4,270 adults and 623 children in the second wave, and 2,348 households, 4,961 adults and 477 children in the third wave, and 2000 households, 3407 adults and 412 children in the fourth wave. The fifth wave is to be launched in 2019. A parallel project, the Shanghai Urban Neighborhood Survey (SUNS), was completed in July 2017, including 5102 households, 8631 adults and 1892 children from 180 neighborhoods, and the second wave follow-up is to be completed in 2019. This talks aims to introduce the background, research designs, and content coverage in both HKPSSD and SUNS, and presents some findings on selected topics concerning urban issues in Hong Kong and Shanghai, and the some plans about the study of Shenzhen in the comparative projects. The HKPSSD and SUNS are expected to serve as an important databases for social science research and policy study as well as for comparative analyses in the Greater China region. Xiaogang Wu (Ph.D., UCLA, 2001) is Chair Professor at Division of Social Sciences and Division of Public Policy at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). His research interests include social inequality, stratification and mobility, gender and family, urban sociology, survey and quantitative methods. His previous work has appeared in the Annual Review of Sociology, American Sociological Review, American Journal of Sociology, Social Forces, Demography, Social Science Research, and other leading journals in China studies. Professor Wu is the President of International Chinese Sociological Association (ICSA) (2018-2019), the founding editor of the Chinese Sociological Review (CSR) (SSCI Impact factor 2.3 in 2017). He also serves on Editorial Board of many prestigious international peer reviewed journals, including Social Forces, Sociology of Education, Social Science Research. He currently also serves as a member of Humanities and Social Sciences Panel, the European Research Council (2017-2019). |
