With her roots in rural Hunan, ties to the global women’s suffrage movement, and experiences leading a nationwide women’s rights movement, Tang Qunying (1871-1937) as a political figure embodied both the strengths and contradictions of Chinese republicanism. The arc of her career exposes the multivalent nature of political leadership, citizenship and civil society in modern China.

Speaker: David Strand
Charles A. Dana Professor of Political Science and East Asian Studies, Dickinson College and Director of the Dickinson in England Humanities Program, University of East Anglia.
