Two thousand and nine officially marked the 160th anniversary of Chinese migration to Lima, Peru. With a focus on what became known as the Chinese “coolie” trade (1849-1874), this presentation explores the beginning of social, historical, and spatial links between China and Peru, the country with the third largest Chinese diaspora in the Americas after the USA and Canada. Moreover, it links Chinese migration from San Francisco to Lima, and the beginning of social and commercial translocal networks between these two urban centres with Hong Kong as the main hub.

Felipe Rubio was born in Lima, Peru, raised in Mexico City, and grew-up in Toronto, Canada. He is currently a postdoctoral fellow in Latin American Studies at the Freie Universität Berlin, where he is researching how Chinese and Chinese-Peruvian communities contribute to the reshaping of social spaces in Lima, Peru. His doctoral research in the Centre for Area Studies at the University of Leipzig, Germany, included an ethnographic study of Peruvian communities in Madrid, Spain and their influence on the re-development of social spaces in this city. Felipe holds a BA from the University of Toronto and an MA from Lancaster University, both in Sociology.
