CHINA STUDIES

China Studies Field Trip to Heilongjiang
28 May to 4 June 2018

20 students and 3 trip leaders journeyed to Northeast China for the first China Studies-Arts Stream programme trip. The group spent two days in Harbin participating in a special short course on historical and current characteristics of Heilongjiang province at Heilongjiang University and touring both world-famous landmarks and places of everyday importance to Harbin residents. Then the group conducted fieldwork in farming communities outside of Harbin and traveled by train to the Sino-Russian border to visit Heihe University and the Xinsheng Orochen Ethnic Village. Trip participants gained personal experiences of both rural and urban life in Northeast China and learned how to study unfamiliar places and people through both arranged interactions and extemporaneous encounters.

Programme Description
China Studies is an interdisciplinary programme aimed at giving students a broad-based education on modern China - its language, culture, history, society, economy, governance, environment, and people. The programme combines the perspectives and curricular strengths of a variety of disciplines, including literature, linguistics, art history, history, philosophy, religion, anthropology, sociology, geography, politics, economics, journalism and communications. Graduates will be prepared to enter a wide range of careers in the public and private sectors in which a comprehensive and sophisticated understanding of China is essential to success.
